At 11:00 AM on October 3, 2026, NIO announced that its public charging network had officially surpassed 100 million cumulative charging sessions. More remarkably, 86.67% of the total electricity delivered across those 100 million sessions was supplied to new energy vehicles manufactured by non-NIO brands.

In the early stages of the electric vehicle market, emerging automakers often relied on closed, proprietary charging systems to entice early adopters and build brand loyalty. However, upon crossing the 100-million milestone, NIO’s operational data underscores an unmistakable shift: the company’s energy replenishment network has moved well beyond the boundaries of a single brand, effectively evolving into shared public infrastructure for China’s broader electric vehicle industry.

Diluting Heavy Capex Across Ten Thousand Stations

To date, NIO has deployed a cumulative total of 9,522 charging and battery swapping stations across China. This expansive energy network comprises 5,361 charging stations, 30,892 charging piles, and 4,161 battery swap stations. Across all corporate brands, cumulative charging and swapping transactions have exceeded 220 million.

Opening capital-intensive private infrastructure to the entire market is an inevitable economic calculation to amortize fixed infrastructure costs. As station counts approach the 10,000 mark, users of a single automotive brand simply cannot generate enough utilization to justify such massive balance-sheet commitments. By opening access to the millions of third-party electric vehicles already on the road, heavy capital expenditures can finally begin to deliver economies of scale and recurring revenue.

Weathering the Holiday Surge with 180,000 Daily Battery Swaps

On the opening day of China’s Golden Week holiday, NIO recorded 183,469 battery swaps in a single 24-hour window, setting a new all-time daily record. During peak travel periods, the automated system completed a battery swap every 0.47 seconds on average across its NIO, ONVO, and Firefly vehicle fleets.

Sustained high throughput is always the ultimate proving ground for an energy network’s real-world capacity. When an infrastructure system can maintain steady, uninterrupted throughput under extreme concurrent demand, it demonstrates true utility-grade resilience. High-frequency operations not only affirm the foundational stability needed to serve the wider public, but also serve as a comprehensive stress test for field equipment reliability.

Energy Replenishment as an Open Public Utility

While most automakers remain locked in an aggressive arms race over battery range and peak fast-charging wattage, NIO has quietly transformed energy replenishment into an open, industry-wide public utility. Delivering over 80% of its charging volume to external vehicles turns past capital outlays directly into shared infrastructure for the broader market.

Underneath this shared infrastructure lies a fundamental shift in competitive dynamics. When an automaker’s charging stalls become an indispensable fixture along rival owners’ daily commutes, it establishes an invisible, highly resilient service dependency. Building superior public infrastructure often delivers a more durable commercial moat than hardware specifications alone.
