Inner Screen Replacement Costs $999, More Than a New iPhone 17
Apple has just published the official repair pricing for the iPhone Duo, and the most glaring entry is “Inner Screen Damage: $999.” Even with AppleCare, you’ll still pay $99. This price exceeds the cost of a brand new iPhone 17—repairing the inner screen of a foldable phone costs more than buying an undamaged one.
Even more outrageous is the “Other Damage” category, priced at $1,499. The iFixit author did the math: that’s enough to buy a MacBook Air plus an iPad. Official repair prices are the most honest reflection of component costs and repair difficulty. Once the pricing list is out, it becomes immediately clear which parts of the device are most expensive and most difficult to disassemble.

Outer Screen $49, the Only Surprise in the Price Sheet
There is good news too. The iPhone Duo’s outer cover glass can be replaced separately for just $49, or $19 for AppleCare users. Scratched or cracked cover glass no longer requires replacing the entire screen assembly.
This design directly competes with Samsung and Google: the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s cover glass repair costs $129, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 doesn’t even offer a cover glass repair option. A cover glass as cheap as $49 shows that Apple made the most fragile layer into a independently replaceable component—at least for this layer, the design leaves room for repairs.
Battery $229, Because There Are Two Inside
Battery service costs $229. For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro is $129, the iPhone 15 is $99, and the iPhone 12 is just $89. The price difference has an engineering explanation: the foldable form factor contains two batteries, so one replacement equals replacing two.
But the same logic doesn’t explain all the price differences. “Other Damage” at $1,499 compared to the 18 Pro’s $849 and the iPhone 15’s $609 is nearly double. The hinge mechanism combined with the multi-layer inner screen means any damage requiring full disassembly hits the most complex parts of the device. Repairs are expensive because of the complex structure; the complexity comes with the foldable form factor itself.
Apple vs. Samsung and Google: Almost Every Item is More Expensive
Looking at the three companies’ price sheets side-by-side makes the comparison even clearer. Outer screen repair: Duo $379, Pixel $178, Galaxy Z Fold 8 only $139. Inner screen: Duo $999, Pixel $568, with Samsung offering two options at $579 or $419. Battery at $229 vs. Pixel’s $88—a gap of nearly three times.
Samsung’s price sheet itself is telling: besides screen replacement, Samsung doesn’t list prices for other repair items on its official site. Google’s pricing document is actually more comprehensive than Apple’s, though the categories are different without strict correspondence. The conservative conclusion from a horizontal comparison is that Apple’s official prices are almost uniformly higher, and third-party repair shops will be pulled up by this official pricing because expensive parts and difficult work are objective facts.

VP Asks for Accountability, But You’ll Pay the Bill
Fold screen creases are the biggest unknown for this new device. When facing the media, Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering Tom Marieb said “Hold us accountable”—meaning they take responsibility for the hinge creases. The fact that they dared say this shows Apple has confidence in their crease solution. But this plastic-based screen is Apple’s first time using it, the matte coating is a first, and the hinge and multi-layer screen stacking haven’t been tested in the real world.
iFixit’s advice to potential buyers is therefore straightforward: if you’re going to buy a Duo, you should also buy AppleCare; an even safer approach is to wait a few months to see how the foldable screen performs, or simply wait for the Duo 2—by then, third-party repair shops will have had two years to practice, and the $999 inner screen price should have softened.
The repair price sheet leaves no secrets: the Duo’s replaceable cover glass gets praise, while the sky-high prices for inner screen and whole-device damage expose the repair difficulties of the foldable structure. The hidden cost of this device should be factored into the total price before hitting the buy button.
