Inside those eight caves, archaeologists documented incised wall carvings, charcoal drawings, and figures rendered in red ochre, a natural iron-rich mineral pigment favoured by ancient artists. Radiocarbon dating and stylistic analysis revealed that these works were created at least 15,000 years ago—pushing back the confirmed timeline of human presence in Ireland by approximately 5,000 years.

The subterranean galleries feature an impressive variety of animal depictions. In one cave, researchers found an incised engraving of a red deer measuring nearly one metre across, with the head and neckline rendered in continuous, confident strokes. On another limestone surface, a shallow relief of a mammoth survives, its curved tusks etched with striking clarity. These lifelike depictions demonstrate how intimately Ice Age hunters observed the megafauna sharing their world.

Alongside portraits of game animals, the cave walls also preserve peculiar finger flutings—grooves carved into soft, moist clay by fingers dragged across the surface. These concentric, closely spaced semi-circular tracks are believed to have been made by Upper Palaeolithic children. Cave Art Pushes Ireland’s Timeline of Human Activity Back 5,000 Years
The newly identified cave art exhibits remarkable technical and stylistic kinship with Welsh Palaeolithic art. For example, red horizontal finger marks at Bacon Hole on the Gower Peninsula, dated to 17,100 years ago, share virtually identical execution methods with the Irish pigments. This continuity demonstrates that communities on both sides of the Irish Sea belonged to the same broader cultural sphere.
Modern humans had migrated from continental Europe into southern Britain before pushing into Wales. As retreating waters laid bare the elevated land bridge, nomadic bands followed game trails further westward. The cave shelters of south-west Ireland mark the western terminus where these intrepid pioneers eventually settled.
While sub-zero glacial gales swept the open plateau, the interior of these limestone caves maintained a constant temperature between 10°C and 15°C. For prehistoric groups lacking freestanding architecture, caves provided essential natural sanctuaries. To safeguard this fragile Palaeolithic heritage from looting and vandalism, the research team has kept the precise locations of the eight caves strictly confidential. International specialists are currently analyzing core sediment samples from the caves to reconstruct more detailed records of climate and daily life during the migration era.
The discovery of rock art across these eight caves rewrites the textbook account of how Ireland was first peopled. When the Last Glacial Maximum drained the Irish Sea, it uncovered a 76-kilometre corridor connecting Pembrokeshire to Rosslare. Ireland’s first human settlers crossed this threshold entirely on foot. Created at least 15,000 years ago, their engravings and ochre pigments stand as the earliest confirmed footprints of humanity on the island.
